Kazuo’s skill to entwine readable prose with huge daunting ideas about our society’s future is incredible — I couldn’t put it down and finished it in a couple of days, but the overarching questions stuck with me for days after. The reader is drip-fed information on this futuristic world, as Klara, the Artificial Friend to Josie, learns the facts herself. The relationship between Klara, Josie and her mother is so interesting and asks what lengths parents will go to for their children.
It’s a love story that questions what it means to love, whilst foreshadowing the impact that big data and genetic modification may have on human identity. If you were a fan of Never Let Me Go, I think Klara and the Sun may even be better.
