A small, quiet novel that depicts beauty in the everyday — the ‘small pleasures’ of life. 1955 Britain; loosely based on a real newspaper article about a woman claiming to have a virgin birth and the scientific study into parthenogenesis. Jean, a journalist, gradually becomes involved in the life of the family she is investigating. Whilst the main story is a bit far-fetched, the narrative is lovely.
