Small Things Like These
Wow, what an emotional and powerful book.
It’s only 114 pages but packs in so much emotion; sadness, horror yet hope throughout. It’s set over a few weeks in 1985, in Ireland, and is based on the Magdalene laundries, so is not an easy story to digest. However, it’s up there with one of the best novels I’ve read and really recommend.
This book has been on my to be read list for a long time, but it’s only when I recently saw the trailer for the upcoming film adaption that I read it. I bought it at Heathrow and had finished it before we touched down in Inverness. It’s so profound I didn’t even feel like listening to music for the rest of the flight.
I think this will be a book people will re-read multiple times and I’m sure it’ll be studied in English literature. I’m really looking forward to the film; Cilian Murphy is fantastic and I’m sure he’ll bring a lot of depth to the character. 10/10
