the Song of Achilles

This is a beautiful adaption of Homer’s Iliad. Narrated from the perspective of Patroclus - Achilles’ lesser known companion, it’s a retelling of the mythology through a love story. I loved Miller’s take on the Greek characters that don’t get much airtime in the Iliad, particularly, Patroclus, Thetis and Briseis. Through a mix of history and fantasy, emotions are woven into the story and it comes together to form a really lovely novel.

The Song of Achilles was released in 2011 and I first read it at school. However, it has recently had a new surge of interest and you may see it in the windows of many bookshops with its new blue and gold illustrated cover. It would make a great read this winter next to a warm fire and a mulled wine.
